FAQs

General FAQs

Overall we feel that the specifications of our ramps are much more fine-tuned in comparison to our competitors. We’ve experimented with multiple transition radiuses, materials, rib spacing, attachment points, and so on. Each obstacle’s design has been tested by professional and amateur level skateboarders as well as by our founder (Cory Keen) who has been an avid skater for over 20 years. We are confident that our ramps provide a better ride, grind, launch, air, etc. in comparison to competitors. Not to mention all of the following:

• All Keen Ramps Mini Half Pipes come standard with 2 layers of plywood underneath the surfacing whereas our competitors have an upcharge to “make the ramp stronger”. We feel every mini ramp should always have 3 layers!

• Our coping is a schedule 40 galvanized steel (the walls are approx. 3/16” thick) whereas the majority of our competitors use a schedule 5 or 10 which is similar to the thickness of fence post. Why does thickness matter so much? Because the denser the metal, the less resistance your trucks will have grinding through which in turn means a more solid feeling grind.

• Our coping is tapped and threaded on the underside with heavy duty 3/8” bolts whereas our competitors use wood screws which get loose and bend over time. Plus, with the coping being attached on the underside there are no holes or screw heads to grind over.

• We space our 2”x4” ribs closer together than others which results in a sturdier transition surface.

• Our galvanized steel threshold plates at the bottom of our Quarter Pipes, wedges, and kickers are thick enough/ supported by ply underneath to prevent bending (a.k.a. “taco-ing”). Plus they are attached with machine screws, nuts, and bolts to prevent the plates from getting loose. Our competitors have their’s attach just with wood screws which loosen dramatically over time.

The strong majority of our ramps can be used for all ages and skill levels of skaters. Typically the 2' high quarter pipes/ mini half pipes, kicker, wedge ramp, and rail jam are great options for beginners. If your child is intermediate or advanced; 3' to 4' quarter pipes/ mini half pipes, flatbars, and grind boxes are a great way to go. If you'd like to further discuss what ramp is the perfect fit for you or your child, give us a call today to speak with one of our experts.

Skatelite is a super durable paper-composite material that is designed to stand up to the daily punishment inflicted by skateboards, scooters, BMX bikes and adverse weather conditions. It’s a great material to use if you want to extend the life of your ramp and/or want your ramp to require less maintenance in the long run. Dense, consistent and without voids, Skatelite is the leading choice to protect your ramp from Mother Nature’s elements backed by a lifetime warranty. Even though Skatelite is indeed Weatherproof, the plywood underneath is not so we STRONGLY recommend treating your plywood prior to assembly (see next FAQ for more info). However, you don’t have to go with Skatelite to protect your ramp from the elements… (see next FAQ for more info.)

• You can paint your birch surfacing as well as the top decks with 2-3 coats of an exterior grade paint. 1-part epoxy paints as well as “porch and floor” paints seem to do really well in terms of protection while not making the ramp too slick. Many people ask, “well what about skate paint?” The composition of the paints we mentioned are very similar to “Skate Paint” and are also about a third of the price.

• Apply a coat of polyurethane or water sealant to all layer(s) of ply under the riding surface (but not the actual riding surface as this will make it extremely slippery). You can also do this to your 2x4s as well as any undersides of deck ply and/or transition sides as an additional measure of protection to increase the longevity of your ramp.

• Cover the ramp with a heavy duty tarp (usually they’re the brown ones, not blue) when it rains or snows.

• When you first install the ramp, you can attach roofing tar paper (with a staple gun) in between the top layer of 3/8” plywood and the top layer of birch or Skatelite. This will help prevent the underlying layers of plywood from soaking and rotting.

• Ensure the ramp sits off of the ground at least a couple of inches. This will prevent moisture from being trapped underneath the ramp. A great way to elevate the ramp as well as level it, is to use cinder block caps (2”x8”X16”) at all of the ramp’s intersecting section points.

The framing of our ramps is made of kiln dried Douglas fir and the final layer is a sanded finish ¼” thick Baltic birch wood.

Our 2’ high ramps feature a 6’ transition radius while the 3’/ 3.5’/ & 4’ high ramps have a 7’ transition radius. The technical overall height of the ramps is the number in the description (i.e. 3.5’ ramps = 42”) minus 4.5” since that’s how high the floor frame is. Therefore the height from the riding surface to the top of the coping is: 37.5”

Shipping Questions

Yes we do, just shoot us an email and let us know what obstacle(s) you’re interested in as well as your address and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible with a quote on shipping.

Due to Corona Virus Covid 19, our shipment times are a bit longer than usual on some orders. Most of our smaller obstacles (i.e. rails, boxes, wedges, etc.) ship via UPS Ground and will take 1-3 weeks to arrive depending on what part of the country you’re in. Larger obstacles such as Quarter Pipes larger than 2'x4' and Transition Ledges, have a lead time of 2-3 weeks and will ship freight (i.e. Central Freight Lines, Reddaway, Tforce Freight). The lead time on our mini half pipes kits is anywhere between 4-6 weeks from placing the order depending on where you live. They will arrive on a 4’x8’ pallet (or 2 for some of the larger ones) and will be delivered by a freight shipping company (i.e. TForce Freight/ FedEx Freight). The handling time on the larger mini ramps is a bit longer at times in comparison to smaller obstacles. Typically the closer you are to California, the faster you’ll get your ramp.
